In the next couple of chapters of the book, Vladek recalls how he escapes the gestapo, lived in the ghetto, and worked illegally disguised as a ethnic polish man. With the risk of being caught anytime by the Germans, Vladek and his family tried to escape to Hungary with smugglers. The Germans are tipped off by the smugglers and Vladek and his family end up in Auschwitz.
Something I've noticed about the book is that the suicide of Art's mother, Anja, is a central part of the book. Vladek is unable to love Mala, the second wife, the same way he loved Anja. This is illustrated by the way he treats Mala like she can't do anything right and that she is lazy. This is stark contrast to how he used to treat Anja before and during the holocaust. Her suicide also seems to have affected Art. In the book, a comic he wrote in 1973 is shown which is about his mother's suicide and is called 'Prisoner from Hell'. In the comic it seems to show how he was traumatized by his mother's suicide and that he felt he was left behind.
